Lake Eyre

So fantastic!!!!  We asked at the desk of our caravan park in Coober Pedy about the flights to Lake Eyre the next day. The fellow at the desk made a call and said we could check later. We had originally set ourselves on a 3 hour tour of Coober Pedy to take place the next morning and thought maybe we'd catch a flight to Lake Eyre in the afternoon.
Well we managed to get ourselves on a flight with two other people to Lake Eyre and it was to leave at 8:20 the next morning. Great!!!
As it so happened, there was the time change that night (Saturday). We set our phone back one hour and then it also set itself back one hour in the middle of the night. We soon found ourselves about 10 minutes late for the flight but decided to head out to the airport anyway in case there was a delay.... Just a slight sense of panic and frustration set in, to say the least!! Thank goodness we went out to the airport anyway.. The pilot was still fueling up the plane and we still had to wait about 10 minutes and then we left.
Words can not describe how privileged we were to be two of so few people that manage to fly over Lake Eyre in a year. There are no people allowed there unless you are a scientist or can arrange to stay in a rare campground with no facilities etc.  To be able to fly over such a special and remote place brought tears to my eyes.  Our pilot Trevor, was so professional and knowledgeable, it was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had in my life.
More pictures and stories in a few days.

Here are some of the views we had on the flight to and from Lake Eyre from Coober Pedy.

The famous Painted Hills - outback Australia - between William Creek and Coober Pedy.

We stopped at William Creek for a break. It was about 42c. Unbelievably hot!!

Getting out of the flies and into the 'airport terminal' to pay our fee for the flight, buy a couple souvenirs and some awesome fly repellent..

This is how far we are from everything!!

Ok, now I'm lost!!

Some colourful parrots...

So many flies. Inescapable....
